Definition - What does 5-Panel Drug Test mean?

A 5-panel drug test is a standardized drug screening procedure in which a sample (usually urine, oral fluid or hair) is submitted for analysis and subsequent confirmation of any one of five controlled substances frequently abused. Employers generally require this information from applicants and/or current employees in order to preserve a drug-free environment and maintain safety while following company regulations. 5-panel drug tests are sometimes referred to as just a 5-panel test.

A 5-panel drug test defines a basic drug screening examination designed to identify any one of five commonly abused controlled substances. These are marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, and PCP. A participant provides a urine sample (or in some cases a hair or oral fluid sample for an alternate version of the 5-panel test), which will be analyzed for drug metabolites to determine negative or positive results. This basic testing method is a practical measure enforced by employers prior to and/or during employment in abidance with company policies and governmental regulations that are intended to bolster a culture of health and safety.
