Definition - What does Alcohol Screening Device mean?

An alcohol screening device (ASD) is a breath or saliva analysis tool approved for use by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for an initial alcohol screening test. The more sensitive Evidential Breath Testing Device (EBT) is not considered an ASD by the NHTSA, but is capable of performing the initial alcohol screening test.

At a minimum, an alcohol screening device approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration must be used when conducting an alcohol screening test pursuant to Department of Transportation rules. Qualified devices are listed on a conforming product list (CPL). Depending on its type, an alcohol screening device is used to take either a breath or saliva specimen and then evaluation that sample to discover whether or not the sample has a prohibited concentration of alcohol. These initial screening devices are not considered evidential. A positive result will trigger further confirmation testing using an evidential breath testing device (EBT).
