Definition - What does Compensable Injury mean?

A compensable injury is a trauma or illness that arises from an incident that occurs in the workplace during the performance of work-related activities that qualifies under regulations to entitle the employee involved to receive compensation in the form of benefits, such as Workers' Compensation payments. The incident must result in either significant medical attention being sought, disability, or death in order for benefits to be paid out by Workers' Compensation.

Accidents happen in the workplace and so it is necessary for employees to be protected against loss of income or disablement resulting from accidents that occur. An injury is deemed to be a compensable injury if it satisfies specific conditions. These conditions include that the injured person must be an employee who incurred the injury or illness while carrying out work-related activities in the workplace. In addition, the injury or illness must be a direct result of the working conditions and it must cause damages in the form of physical impairment or loss of income.
