Definition - What does Continuing Education mean?

Continuing education consists of educational programs designed to improve, supplement or refresh the knowledge and skills of an individual. In some trades or professions, regular continuing education is required to maintain the individual's licensing or certification.

Continuing education may be requested or required by employers for employees in a variety of roles. However, some job duties are subject to regulations that require continuing education. For example, the Department of Transportation requires that substance abuse professionals (SAP) engage in continuing education to ensure that they are knowledgeable about the DOT drug and alcohol testing program. A substance abuse professional, or SAP, is required to receive 12 hours of relevant continuing education during each three-year renewal period to maintain their certification.
