Definition - What does Occupational Health mean?

Occupational Health is discipline of determining and altering anything that is detrimental to the health and well-being of a worker. It relates to the identification, assessment, and control of hazards in the workplace from hazardous chemicals, environmental factors, and operating around heavy machinery, to workers operating in noisy areas, to something as simple and second nature as the use of personal protective equipment. All of the identification, assessment, and control of hazards is used to maintain or improve the health and well-being of workers both physically and mentally on the job site. Occupational health is interchangeable with occupational health and safety, workplace health, and workplace health and safety.

Occupational health is a preventative discipline with the goal of identifying and mitigating all hazards that arise on a job site. This is typically done by a worksite assessment to determine the hazards, and then addressing the hazard with things like architectural or engineered barriers, policies to limit worker exposure, personal protective equipment, or any other measures required to mitigate the risk. All of this is done in an effort to make job sites as safe a possible for workers and to improve their overall well-being while at work.
