Definition - What does Orinasal Respirator mean?

An orinasal respirator is a type of air-purifying face mask that covers the nose and mouth of the wearer. They are commonly fabric filters used in a work environment where the air is contaminated but the oxygen concentration is not compromised. The orinasal respirator filters the air passing through the facepiece and eliminates the fumes, gases, or toxins so that it is safe for the wearer to inhale.

In workplace environments where workers are exposed to contaminated air during the performance of their duties, the employer is required by The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to protect workers by supplying the correct respirator for the environment. The orinasal respirator may be worn by a worker if they have been approved by a medical practitioner to do so and that the environment is suitable for use base on the type and severity of the contamination in the air. The oxygen concentration must be no less than 19.5% for the orinasal respirator to be utilized safely.
