Definition - What does Vocational Profile mean?

A vocational profile (VP) is a repository of information used to collect and store information about an individual's workplace capabilities and limitations. Going beyond objective measures such as aptitude test scores, a VP may include notations regarding the individual's skills, strengths, interests, needs, and goals. This information can then be used to help the individual profiled train for or find work that is suited to his or her specific needs and preferences.

A vocational profile (VP) is a tool used by vocational counsellors and other professionals to assist in the job placement of individuals with disabilities, among others. A VP may sometimes be developed while a person is still a juvenile and used to guide their education and set individualized goals. Government agencies, such as the U.S. Social Security Administration may look at an individual's vocational profile when assessing his or her ability to maintain employment.

To create a vocational profile, employment specialists or other vocational professionals may conduct interviews with the individual being profiled, observe the individual while he or she performs work-related tasks, or conduct other testing and evaluations.
