Respirator (Mask) Fit Testing

Respirator (Mask) Fit Testing

ABOUT

Respirator Fit testing (aka mask-fit testing) safeguards employee lung health by ensuring workers are wearing properly sized and sealed respiratory protective equipment, that no leaks are occurring, and that particulates are being sufficiently filtered.

Quantitative vs. Qualitative Respirator Fit Testing

Quantitative Respirator Fit Testing

This is considered the “gold standard”. Using a Portacount machine, SureHire measures the amount of leakage into the respirator. The measurement is taken while the worker performs dynamic movements and breathing exercises resembling those experienced on the job site.

Qualitative Respirator Fit TestinG

Qualitative Mask Fit Testing relies on the worker’s sensory response to determine if there is a leak in the respirator seal. While wearing the respirator, the worker will be exposed to one or more testing agents. Results are based on whether or not the employee reacts to the substance, such as coughing or by detecting a taste or smell.

We offer flexible testing solutions designed to fit your organization’s unique needs. With multiple options available, you can choose the approach that works best for your business and your workforce, making the process simple, efficient, and convenient.

FAQs

The most common airborne hazards that employers must monitor for (based on occupational health and safety laws) include asbestos, coal dust, and silica.

When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed or damaged, fibres are released into the air. When these fibres are inhaled they can cause serious lung conditions that often take a long time to develop but, once diagnosed, can be deadly. Asbestos can cause the following conditions:

Mesothelioma

Asbestos-related lung cancer

Asbestosis

Pleural thickening

You can protect yourself by ensuring that you receive the proper training. In many provinces, each worker must undergo a certificate course through an accredited agency. Each worker must also ensure that they are wearing the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) including respiratory protective equipment appropriate for asbestos exposure. Talk to your employer if you have any questions or concerns.
