The accession number relates back to a Custody and Control Form in the laboratory's Laboratory Information System (LIM). The accession number is used to blind the laboratory technicians to the identity of the donor providing the specimen while still allowing them an efficient way of relating the sample back the Custody and Control Form and the donor in the LIM after testing.
