Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine deriving from traditional Chinese medicine that involves the insertion of needles into the body of a patient at specific points. Acupuncture is also used through the application of heat, pressure, and laser light. It is generally used as a method of pain relief but is also applied to various other conditions.

Acupuncture treats a patient through activating specific pressure points in the body, usually via a needle, that stimulate nerve and muscle tissue under the skin. This stimuli in the body produce pain relieving substances including endorphins, according to practitioners. Acupuncture is largely based in ancient Chinese traditional health practices and bases its theories in traditional beliefs.

Acupuncture is commonly used to treat pain conditions such as headaches, lower back problems, and osteoarthritis. Practitioners also use acupuncture for other conditions, which can range from treating infertility to anxiety and asthma.
