An anesthesiologist is a physician who has undergone additional studies and training to become a specialist in the field of anesthesiology. An anesthesiologist manages the medications and procedures used to reduce or eliminate a patient's ability to feel pain during surgery. The anesthesiologist and anesthesia care team also manage postanesthesia recovery. An anesthesiologist may also be called a physician anesthesiologist.

Additional non-physician medical professionals with anesthesiology training include anesthesiologist assistants and nurse anesthetist. The physician anesthesiologist is responsible for the patient's anesthesia-related care before, during, and after surgery. They also supervise any other members of the anesthesia care team.
