Definition - What does Carbon Dioxide mean?
Carbon dioxide is a waste product formed by the conversion of food to energy. It helps to maintain the right acid-base level in the blood. Where irregular results are obtained, this may be indicative of a problem with the elimination of carbon dioxide from the body.
SureHire explains Carbon Dioxide
The total carbon dioxide test measures the levels of the waste product carbon dioxide found in the blood. It is most often included in an electrolyte panel which measures and assesses acid-base or electrolyte imbalances. The carbon dioxide test results indicate the severity of any imbalances that may be found and can identify whether the cause is metabolic or respiratory.
Carbon dioxide, chloride, sodium and potassium are measured by an electrolyte panel. The carbon dioxide test may also be carried out as part of a comprehensive metabolic panel or basic metabolic panel, or during a regular medical check.
