A Department of Transportation test defines a methodical procedure involving alcohol and/or drug screenings executed under DOT regulations. Department of Transportation tests apply only to workers in certain industries and positions. DOT testing also mandates when drug and alcohol testing is to be conducted for covered individuals. Pre-employment screening, random screening, reasonable/suspicion screening, and return-to-duty screening are included in the DOT guidelines. The type of drug and alcohol test and sample to be used is mandated, although employers may chose to use additional drug and alcohol tests in some cases. When subject to DOT testing, employers must also use labs that are certified to carry out DOT testing.
