An environmental analysis involves a detailed study of a worksite and all of the factors within the worksite that can affect employee safety and performance. This can include an evaluation of such factors as employee education and training, tools used by the employees, workstation ergonomics, workplace procedures, physical worksite conditions, and administrative controls such as shift rotation.

Environmental analysis seeks to identify potential risks, exposures, and issues within a job site in order to prevent or minimize them.
An employee's workstation, for example, may be evaluated to assess it's potential to cause repetitive strain injuries. This may entail a study of the stress and strains that the workstation places on the employee's body, including the height of the workstation, the physical distance between controls, the time that each employee spends at the workstation on each assigned task, the intervals of rest between working, and the frequency of employee rotation.
An environmental analysis also includes the evaluation of broader issues such as the productivity and safety of particular jobs in their entirety or the productivity and safety of a worksite in its entirety. This can include analyzing the policies, procedures, management, and operation of the worksite, as well as uncovering issues that are common to all employees of the worksite, such as employee exposure to toxic substances.
