Definition - What does Individual Placement Model mean?
The individual placement model is a research based support system method for people with severe mental health issues. The model works by following eight principles that guide a person with mental health issues or addiction issues through the process of finding and then maintaining gainful employment.
The model has counselors and specialists in several areas working together with the individual needing help and with the community at large to find the best solution for each client.
The individual placement model is also known as the individual placement and support model (IPS).

The individual placement and support model (IPS) has eight principles. Each of these is based on research over the last 2 decades.
1. Employment is the main goal of the program
2. Everyone willing to work is eligible for assistance
3. The support group (generally government provided) will assist in the job search based on the individual's strengths and wants.
4. The process will move quickly with potential employers in the community contacted within a month.
5. Specialists will work as a team to find gainful employment for clients.
6. Specialists work to ensure satisfactory outcomes for both the client and the employer.
7. Advance monies may be provided as part of the process as employment begins.
8. Specialists work to build and maintain relationships with employers in less obvious labor markets.
The support program works with different demographics beyond jsut mental health clients. These include individuals with drug and substance abuse problems, older adults, and those with PTSD diagnosis.
