Definition - What does L5/S1 mean?

L5/S1 refers to the lower section of the spinal column where the lumbar region meets with the sacral region. Because this area of the spine bears much of the pressure of the body's weight, it is particularly susceptible to disc herniation, which frequently results from workplace injury.

SureHire explains L5/S1

L5/S1 refers to the part of the spine where the last vertebrae of the lumbar region (L5) meets with the sacrum (S1). The lower the area of the spine, the more pressure it is subjected to in terms of body weight, making L5/S1 an area that is particularly susceptible to disc herniation, which then translates into sciatic pain as the disc bulges from its normal position and presses into nerve bundles. This type of injury is often associated with improper lifting, repetitive movements, and trauma in the workplace.
