Definition - What does Lumbosacral mean?
The lumbosacral region, or joint, of the spine refers to the vertebral segment between the last lumbar vertebrae and the sacrum (L5-S1). These structures provide a stable base for the spine while also allowing twisting and bending in multiple directions. This area of the spine is under the most pressure when a person is seated, making good ergonomic chair design vital in injury prevention.
SureHire explains Lumbosacral
Lower back pain can originate from the lumbosacral joint. The most common causes of pain in the lumbosacral joint are L5-S1 disc herniation, degenerative disc disease and spondylolisthesis. A worker’s occupation and position may increase the chances of injury in the lower back. The joint is typically assessed by X-ray, MRI or CT scan to determine the nature and severity of the injury.
Between 30-75% of cases of low back pain show reoccurrence within 3 years of the first episode so prevention is the best practice. Studies have shown that intervention at the occupational level leads to better results for the patient.
