A urine point of collection test is an analysis of a urine sample that takes place at the collection site. A collection site is a designated location to which employees are directed for the purpose of providing a specimen for drug or alcohol testing. These point of collection tests are not as accurate as full laboratory testing. To confirm drug use following a positive result from a urine point of collection test, full laboratory testing is usually required. Urine point of collection testing is also called point of care testing (POCT) and express testing.

Urine point of collection testing is a rapid result test that permits the collector at the collection site to visually assess test results. Usually this is done with a test strip or digital display. Urine point of collection tests are a cost effective and time efficient drug screening tool because they do not require the presence of a medical review officer or shipment of samples to a laboratory for evaluation.
Urine point of collection testing may not be used to affirmatively prove drug use, but can effectively screen for negative results. The Department of Transportation (DOT) does not permit the use of urine point of collection tests under compliance rules for DOT drug and alcohol screening of covered employees.
