Definition - What does Ventilation mean?

Ventilation is the process of generating and circulating fresh, purified air which, in turn, removes impure air coupled with dispersing particulate matter including dust, fumes, gas, mist, and vapors. Many facilities utilize ventilation by natural means such as doors and/or windows in conjunction with mechanical operations that include heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system units and local exhaust ventilation (LEV) installations. The air quality in a building can dictate overall environmental conditions that conform to acceptable health standards.

SureHire explains Ventilation

Proper ventilation is essential in the supply of filtered air to promote normal respiration, lowering risk of inhaling airborne pathogens and/or toxic contaminants that threaten independent health. For many businesses, ventilation is a practical health and safety measure that involves distributing a steady flow of clean air, regulating different ambient factors such as humidity, pollution dispersal, and temperature control.

Regular maintenance and/or replacement of outdated or faulty ventilation system units can influence whether employees remain healthy or develop common infectious conditions, for example, sick building syndrome. A particular line of work can entail distinct job duties and tasks, requiring viable ventilation alternatives catering to personal needs such as provision of cooling and/or heating control mechanisms and dehumidifiers.

The absence of ventilation can lead to a buildup of chemical and toxic emissions, putrid odors, and increased moisture (humidity). Individuals who smoke and/or have respiratory difficulties such as asthma are predisposed to major health issues due to a weakened immune system undermining efficiency and productivity.
