Definition - What does Accuracy Check mean?
An accuracy check, within the context of alcohol testing, is a procedure performed on a breathalyzer in order to verify that it is working properly. For an accuracy check, a sample with a known concentration of alcohol is tested and the device's results are compared to the known content to ensure the device is returning accurate results within specified tolerances. This is also called a calibration check or external calibration check.

In order to perform an accuracy check, the device must be tested against a known set standard to ensure the device is delivery accurate results and that calibration was successful. There are two basic types of accuracy checks used for breathalyzer devices. These are the wet bath and dry gas methods. Manufacturers of breathalyzers set timelines for when breathalyzers should be calibrated and the best method for that specific model. Regulations also affect when and how (in some cases) breathalyzers are subjected to an accuracy check.
