Definition - What does Inguinal mean?

Inguinal is an anatomical term used to refer to the groin or lower abdomen region of the body. This region of the body includes the lower abdominal wall, which supports the intestines. Blood vessels, nerves, and parts of the reproductive system pass through the lower abdominal wall and to the body's genitalia through short, narrow passage called the inguinal canal.

SureHire explains Inguinal

The term inguinal is most often used when referring to an inguinal hernia. This type of hernia occurs when a portion of the intestines or other abdominal tissue pushes through a weakened area of the lower abdominal muscle wall.

Because of differences in their anatomy, this type of hernia is more common among men than women. Some infants are born with what is known as an indirect inguinal hernia, where their abdomen does not fully develop and seal around the inguinal canal.

Pain when coughing or lifting or a noticeable bulge along the lower abdomen are signs of an inguinal herina.
